In my opinion. I need to understand well the other cultures by searching on Internet or maybe asking them like, we just have a good conversation about our own cultures or maybe we can share each other. In a polite way.
Answer :
It depends on which nation you live in and what culture they are adopted. I think Indonesia has a different culture from the United States culture, and I would never want to integrate both cultures. Indonesia adopts mosaic cultures, whereas The US adopts a melting pot. In addition, cultures are the hallmark of a nation. Special characteristics of an area and the local community that has existed for a long time. The way I define myself to foreigners is to behave, speak, and dress like Indonesian culture.
3. What is stereotype and prejudice? Does it exist in your local culture? Give example?
Answer :
- Prejudice is a negative attitude and feeling toward an individual based solely on one’s membership in a particular social group (Allport, 1954; Brown, 2010). It already exists in my local culture. The prejudice I have heard most often from the past until now is about the Papuan people, or Papuan tribes who are considered terrible, deepest, left behind, primitive, and many other negative things. Even though not all members of the tribe or people of Papua are terrible and scary. As a result of this prejudice, the Papuan people often face discrimination and are ostracized.
- A stereotype is a prejudice or wrong belief in someone or a group by only judging something from the outside. Or a negative assumption. For example, in our culture, people used to always think of women as weak, backward people who didn't deserve to go to higher education, in the end, women would only become housewives without being able to have hope for a good future. In fact, not all women just want to be housewives. The proof is that now there are many successful women with careers in various fields and aspects of life
